The Most Hated Woman in America – Susan Smith

October 25, 1994, 23-year-old Susan Smith ran to a house near John D Long Lake in Union, South Carolina. She pounded on the door, calling for help, crying, nearly hysterical. Her babies, she said, her boys age 3 and 14 months, they’d been taken. A call was placed to 9-1-1 and police mobilized. What law enforcement learned over the next nine days was chilling. Susan Smith would finally confess. She had done the unthinkable.

David Smith wrote a book about his experiences. Find it here.

Linda Russell also wrote a book. My Daughter Susan Smith.

  1. Hi I just discovered the podcast last night and I’m already on episode 10.

You should consider doing an episode on the case of Brandi Wells from Longview Texas. I heard about her story years ago on Disappeared and she crosses my mind often. Very strange case where it seems clear you can see a possible perp on cctv but the police don’t even mention this. If you haven’t heard about her look into it as it’s baffling.

  2. This was my first time listening to your podcast and I just wanted to say “keep up the good work”!

  3. I have been binging your podcast from episode 1 (started a week and a half ago) and this episode bothers me so, so much. I know Susan’s mother did not kill her grandchildren but she provided a terrible upbringing and offered no protection. How she could stay married to a predator and then defend him!

Those poor children, and poor David Smith. How different all of this could have been if Susan had been given the support she needed in childhood.

Thank you for covering the cases you do – the podcast is captivating and your voice is so lovely!
